How it's calculated

  • One-time purchases: each sale earns price × (1 − store fee). Paying users needed = goal ÷ that amount. Downloads needed = paying users ÷ the share of downloads that pay.
  • Subscriptions, year one: you start with no subscribers. On a monthly plan, month 12's revenue comes from everyone who joined in months 1 to 12 and hasn't cancelled. On a yearly plan, nobody renews before month 13, so each month's revenue comes from that month's new subscribers.
  • Subscriptions, long run: each month's new subscribers keep paying until they cancel, at the lower App Store fee after their first year where it applies. Revenue levels off when the subscribers who cancel are replaced by new ones.

Enter prices without VAT or sales tax. The calculator assumes the same number of downloads every month and counts store purchases only. Store fees were checked on October 28, 2026. Apple's different rates in the EU, China mainland and Japan aren't covered: the fee calculator lists every rate and its source.

Questions

What conversion rate should I use?
Your own, if you have it: paying users ÷ downloads for a recent month, from App Store Connect or Google Play Console. If you don't have one yet, try a cautious guess and an optimistic one to see the range.
Why do subscriptions need fewer downloads in the long run?
Because subscribers keep paying. In year one, revenue comes from recent subscribers only. Later, renewals from earlier months add up, so each month needs fewer new subscribers to reach the same goal.
Does this include ad revenue?
No. It counts purchases and subscriptions through the App Store or Google Play only.
